Traditional Hammam in Casablanca: What to Know

A traditional Moroccan hammam is a dry-heat ritual focused on deep cleansing rather than steam. Expect a sequence: you undress (same-sex areas), sit in a hot room to sweat, then an attendant vigorously scrubs you with a rough glove and black soap, rinses you with buckets of warm water, and often finishes with a massage using argan oil. It’s surprisingly physical—the scrubbing can feel intense if you’re not prepared—and leaves your skin feeling brand new. Locals go weekly; travelers usually do it once. Most places provide disposable underwear, but bring your own flip-flops and a change of clothes. Women’s sections are often busier and more social than men’s.

Best time is October to April when it’s cooler outside; summers in Casablanca get hot and the hammam can feel overwhelming. Expect to pay around 250–450 MAD for a basic scrub and massage package; add-ons like face masks or longer massages push it toward 600–800 MAD. Skip the fancy hotel “hammam experiences” aimed at tourists and choose a proper local bath—more authentic and half the price. Pick the mid-range “with massage” option; the pure scrub without massage feels incomplete. Go in the morning when it’s quieter and cleaner.
