Is the Hong Kong Tram Heritage Ride Worth It?

The heritage tram ride is a relaxed, old-school way to see Hong Kong Island from Causeway Bay to Kennedy Town or the other direction. You sit on wooden benches in a restored 1920s-style open-top double-decker while it trundles along at about 20 km/h through busy streets, past markets, skyscrapers, and local life. Expect around 45–60 minutes of gentle swaying, traffic noise, and decent photo opportunities from the top deck. It’s not a thrill ride or a deep history lecture — it’s simply a pleasant, low-key way to experience the city’s original public transport. The tram gets crowded on weekends and during golden hour when everyone wants the same views.

Best time is late afternoon or early evening from October to March when the weather is cooler and the light is softer; summers are hot, humid, and less comfortable on an open tram. Expect to pay around HK$150–280 per person depending on whether you choose a simple scheduled heritage tram or a slightly longer guided sightseeing option. One honest tip: skip the add-on “dinner tram” packages — the food is average and you’re stuck for two hours. Just buy the basic heritage ride and get off near a good local restaurant instead. Another tip: sit on the right side going west for the best harbour glimpses between buildings.
