Ubud Rice Terrace Tour: Worth It?

The classic Ubud rice terrace experience is a half- or full-day trip to the lush green paddies around Tegalalang. Expect beautiful stepped terraces, photo stops, short walks along the ridges, and usually a stop at a swing or café overlooking the fields. Most tours combine it with other nearby sights like the Monkey Forest, a waterfall, or a temple. It’s scenic and relaxing if you like slow countryside views, but it can feel touristy with crowds at the main viewpoints and plenty of vendors selling coffee and souvenirs. The actual “terrace walk” is often shorter than people imagine.

Best time to go is the dry season (May–September) when the fields are bright green or golden depending on the harvest cycle. Avoid the wet season (December–March) unless you don’t mind rain and muddy paths. Expect to pay around $35–80 per person for a half-day tour and $60–120 for a full-day private tour with hotel pickup, guide, and transport. Shared group tours are cheaper but less flexible.

Honest tip: Choose a private tour with an early start if you want decent photos without crowds. Skip the overpriced “Bali swing” packages unless that’s your thing — the terraces themselves are the real attraction. If you’re short on time or on a tight budget, you can easily visit the main terraces independently by scooter or Grab and save the tour fee.
