Uetliberg is Zurich’s closest “mountain” at 870 m, offering wide-open views over the city, lake, and distant Alps on clear days. The standard trip is a 15-minute train ride from the main station to the summit station, followed by a short paved walk to the lookout tower. From there you can continue on the easy Planet Trail to Felsenegg (about 1.5–2 hours one way), where you can grab a drink or catch the cable car back down. Expect a mix of families, trail runners, and tourists; the paths are wide, well-signed, and mostly gentle. The tower itself is a straightforward metal structure with 170+ steps and solid 360° views, but it gets crowded on weekends.
Best time is late spring through early autumn (May–October) for reliable visibility; summer sunsets are popular but bring bug spray. Winter can be beautiful with snow but the trail may be icy and the tower often closed. Expect to pay around CHF 15–35 total per person including return transport from Zurich, tower entry, and perhaps a drink at the top—cheaper if you already have a travel pass. Honest tip: skip the tower if it’s a white-out day or you dislike stairs; instead walk the ridge trail for the real pleasure. Pick a weekday morning to avoid the biggest crowds and bring your own water—options at the top are limited and overpriced.
