You’ll put on a helmet with air fed from the surface and ride a small underwater scooter a few meters below the surface, basically snorkeling but without a mask on your face. The scooters are easy to drive – just steer and control speed. Expect to see coral, fish, and maybe a turtle or two on a 20-30 minute ride. It’s not a deep dive; you stay shallow so it feels more like an activity than a serious scuba trip. Groups are small and there’s usually a guide leading. It’s genuinely fun if you like being in the water but don’t want to deal with snorkel fog or breathing through a tube.
The best time is April to December when the sea is calmer and visibility is better. Avoid January to March – that’s cyclone season and the water can be choppy and murky. Expect to pay around $80–$130 per person including hotel pickup in most tourist areas. It’s usually cheaper if you book directly rather than through your hotel.
Pick a tour that goes to the quieter west or north coast sites rather than the busy ones near Grand Baie if you want to actually see marine life instead of other tourists. Skip it if you’re prone to seasickness – the boat ride out can be bumpy even on good days. Bring a waterproof phone case or GoPro; the photos underwater with the helmet on are surprisingly decent.
