The USS Midway is a massive aircraft carrier turned museum docked in San Diego Bay. You get a solid three to four hours of exploring flight decks, cockpits, the bridge, galley, and berthing areas with a decent self-guided audio tour narrated by sailors who served on her. Docents – many of them veterans – are stationed throughout and are usually happy to answer questions. It feels like walking through a floating small city; bring comfortable shoes because you’ll do a lot of stairs and metal decks. The views of the harbor and downtown from the flight deck are genuinely good, especially at sunset.
Expect to pay around $25–$35 per adult; kids and military discounts bring it lower. Spring and fall are best – milder temperatures and smaller crowds than summer. Avoid midday in July and August unless you like sweating in tight metal corridors. Go early in the day or around 3pm when the school groups thin out.
Tip: Spend most of your time on the flight deck and hangar deck with the planes; those areas feel the most authentic. Skip the lower engineering spaces unless you’re really into machinery – they’re hot, noisy, and repetitive. Grab an audio device in your preferred language at the entrance and don’t be afraid to ask the veterans questions; they’re the best part of the visit.
