Expect a busy but well-organized museum packed with 200+ Van Gogh originals including Sunflowers, The Bedroom, and Almond Blossom. The permanent collection is displayed chronologically so you can follow his life and artistic development in one visit. Temporary exhibitions on the lower level are usually excellent but add to the crowds. The building itself is bright and modern with big windows; audio guides are decent but many people just wander at their own pace. It takes 1.5–2.5 hours depending on how deeply you want to look.
Best time to go is weekdays right at opening (usually 9am) or after 3pm. Avoid weekends and Dutch school holidays if possible. Summer is peak season with long lines; shoulder months (April–May and September–October) give you better odds of a calmer visit while the city is still pleasant. Expect to pay around €20–30 for a standard timed ticket. Guided small-group tours push the total closer to €90–120 per person but get you in without stress.
Buy timed-entry tickets in advance or you’ll waste hours in the queue. Skip the overpriced museum shop on the way out and the basement café unless you just need a quick coffee. If you’re short on time, focus on the top two floors and the permanent collection; the special exhibits are nice but not essential.
