The main attraction is the massive, remarkably intact 17th-century warship Vasa that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628. It dominates a huge hall and you walk around it on multiple levels, getting close enough to see the intricate carvings. Expect a serious museum experience: excellent lighting, clear English signage, and good flow. The accompanying exhibits on daily life, shipbuilding, and the dramatic salvage operation add real context. It's not a theme-park "Viking" experience with actors or rides; it's a proper maritime museum that happens to have one spectacular, nearly complete ship as its star. Most people spend 60-90 minutes here.

Best time is early morning or late afternoon to avoid the worst crowds; go in shoulder season (spring or fall) if you can. Expect to pay around $20-30 for a standard ticket, more like $50-70 if you add a guided tour. One solid tip: skip the overpriced on-site café and the short film unless you have loads of time. Instead, walk the full circuit of the ship twice – once at ground level and once from the upper balconies. The different perspectives are the real highlight and you can't get that from any brochure photo.
