Should You Paddle the Vltava in Prague?

Paddling the Vltava gives you a completely different view of Prague. You glide under Charles Bridge, float past the massive walls of Prague Castle, and see the city from water level without the crowds. Expect a relaxed but surprisingly physical trip. The river is mostly calm with very light current, but you’ll share it with tourist boats, so you need to stay aware and keep left of the bigger vessels. The classic route starts near Vyšehrad and heads downstream toward the center; it takes 2–3 hours and gives you the best photo angles of the old town and castle. It’s genuinely pleasant on a sunny day but can feel repetitive if the weather is cold or gray.

The best time is May through September, with June–August being peak. Water is warmest then and days are long. Expect to pay around €45–75 per person for a guided stand-up paddleboarding session including equipment and basic instruction. Simple kayak or canoe rentals are usually a bit cheaper. One honest tip: choose a morning tour if you can; the river is quieter, light is better for photos, and the tourist boats haven’t fully woken up. Skip the big-group sunset SUP parties unless you enjoy loud music and drinking while trying to balance — they’re more party than paddle.
