Waitakere Hiking Guide from Auckland

Expect dense native bush, steep muddy tracks, waterfalls, and dramatic black-sand beaches on the west coast. The Waitakere Ranges are wilder and wetter than most Auckland day trips. You'll get a solid workout, plenty of birdsong, and occasional sweeping views when the clouds lift. Tracks range from easy boardwalks to slippery, root-filled trails that can turn ankle-deep in mud after rain. It's genuine New Zealand bush, not a groomed park, so come prepared for slippery sections and changeable weather even on short hikes.

Winter and early spring can be beautiful but very muddy and prone to track closures after heavy rain.
