Picnicking at Walter Sisulu Gardens, Johannesburg

Expect a big, well-kept green space with wide lawns, flower beds, a dramatic waterfall, and a few easy walking trails that take 30-60 minutes each. The vibe is relaxed rather than wild – paved paths, decent toilets, and plenty of shade if you pick your spot right. It’s popular with local families and couples on weekends, so it feels lived-in rather than touristy. Bring your own picnic or buy simple takeaways nearby; there’s no fancy restaurant on site. The waterfall and cliff views are the highlight and worth the short walk from the main lawns.

Best time is autumn (March–May) or spring (September–November) when the weather is mild and the gardens look their freshest. Johannesburg summer can be hot and thundery; winter days are sunny but nights get cold. Go early on weekends to claim a good shady tree before the crowds arrive. Expect to pay around R60–R120 per adult for entry, with kids usually half price or less; parking is included.

Tip: head past the main lawns toward the waterfall area for quieter picnic spots with better views – the open lawns near the entrance get noisy. Skip trying to do all the trails if you’re only here for a picnic; one short loop is enough. Pack insect repellent in summer and bring your own drinks – the on-site kiosk is basic.
