Water of Leith Walk: Edinburgh's best riverside stroll

The Water of Leith Walk follows the river for about 12 miles from Balerno to Leith, but most visitors do the popular 2–4 hour stretch from the Dean Village area down to the Shore in Leith. Expect a mix of leafy paths, occasional waterfalls, old mills, and surprisingly good birdlife right in the middle of the city. It feels genuinely separate from the tourist crowds on the Royal Mile – more like a local’s escape than a formal attraction. The surface is mostly good gravel or tarmac, fine in trainers, but it can get muddy after rain and there are some steepish steps near the start.

Best time is late spring through early autumn. May to September gives you long daylight, wildflowers, and leafy green tunnels. Winter walks are atmospheric but short and often wet; expect to pay around £0–15 total – completely free if you do it yourself with a map, or £10–15 for a guided small-group walk that includes commentary. Bring a packed lunch or stop for a pint at the end in Leith.

Pick the Dean Village to Leith direction so you finish near good pubs and the tram back to town. Skip trying to do the whole route in one go unless you’re a keen walker; the upper sections are pleasant but less dramatic. Go early in the morning if you want the path mostly to yourself.
