Waterfall Swimming in Liberia: What to Know

Expect a mix of jungle hiking, river crossings, and swimming in cool freshwater pools at the base of cascades. La Leona tends to be the more adventurous option with canyons, small caves to explore, and a decent swim after a solid hike. Llanos del Cortes is gentler – easier access, big pool for swimming, and strong photo opportunities, often combined with a quick Liberia city stop. Both are in tropical dry forest so the scenery is green but not overwhelming rainforest. Tours last 4–7 hours including transport from Liberia.

Best time is December to April during the dry season when water levels are safe and trails aren’t muddy. June–November brings higher flows that can make swimming stronger but some operators cancel if rivers rise too much. Expect to pay around $80–$150 per person for a half-day group tour; private tours start closer to $200–$250. Entrance fees and basic lunch are usually included.

Pick La Leona if you want a bit of adventure and swimming; skip the city tour add-on unless you genuinely want to see Liberia – it eats time. Bring water shoes, quick-dry clothes, and bug spray. The “hidden cave experience” is usually just a couple of small rock overhangs – fine if you’re already going, but not worth choosing a tour solely for that.
