Werribee Open Range Zoo gives you a solid half-day wildlife experience about 30 minutes west of Melbourne. Think African-style savanna with rhinos, giraffes, zebras and hippos that you view from an open-sided safari bus, plus walk-around areas for lions, meerkats, cheetahs and Australian animals. The bus ride lasts around 45 minutes and feels relaxed rather than thrilling; you get decent close-up chances and clear photos because the vehicles stay on wide tracks well back from the animals. The walking trails are flat and easy, but the whole place is spread out so expect a fair bit of walking between exhibits.
Best time is spring (October–November) or autumn (March–April) when the weather is mild and the animals are more active. Summers are hot and the animals hide; winter can be cold and wet. Expect to pay around $50–$60 per adult for standard entry. Adding the safari bus pushes it to roughly $80–$95 per person. Families should budget extra for food and transport from the city.
Honest tip: do the safari bus once – it’s the only way to see the big herds properly. Skip the paid “behind the scenes” extras unless you really love giraffes; they’re not worth the money for most visitors. Wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen and water, and go early to avoid the midday crowds.
