Whale Watching from Manila: What You Need to Know

Most whale watching tours from Manila are actually day trips or overnight excursions to the seas off Batangas, sometimes as far as Mindoro. Expect a very early start (often 4–5am pickup), a couple of hours by van, then 2–4 hours on a small outrigger boat. You’ll likely see spinner dolphins in large playful groups; humpback whales and dwarf sperm whales are possible but not guaranteed. The experience is more “looking for marine life from a bangka” than luxury wildlife cruise. Seas can get choppy, boats have limited shade, and you won’t swim with whales.

Best time is December to early May when the waters are calmer and whale sightings are more consistent; July–October is rough and often cancelled. Expect to pay around $80–$150 per person including transport, basic lunch, and guide. Private or smaller-group trips sit at the higher end.

Tip: Choose a smaller boat with 8–10 people max if you can – you’ll get better views and less seasickness than the packed 30-person tours. Skip anything promising guaranteed whale swims or close encounters; those are marketing nonsense and often lead to disappointment. Bring motion-sickness meds, reef-safe sunscreen, and a good hat.
