Bali’s white water rafting is mostly on the Ayung River: Class II-III rapids that are fun but not terrifying. Expect a 1.5–2 hour paddle through rainforest and past rice terraces, with a few small waterfalls and swimming stops. The boats are big inflatable rafts, you get a helmet, life jacket and paddle, and guides do most of the work. It’s touristy—there are lots of groups—but the scenery is genuinely beautiful and the water is refreshingly cool after the heat. Don’t expect wild adrenaline; it’s more like an active nature excursion with some splashes and laughs.
Best time is May to October (dry season) when the river has decent flow but isn’t dangerously high. Avoid the peak rainy season (December–February) unless you want murkier water and possible cancellations. Expect to pay around $25–45 per person including transport, equipment, simple lunch and insurance. Private tours or better operators sit at the higher end; rock-bottom deals are usually worth skipping.
Tip: choose a morning trip to avoid the afternoon crowds and heat. Skip any package that bundles rafting with elephant rides or other unethical stuff—stick to the rafting and maybe add a quick waterfall swim instead. Wear quick-dry clothes, bring a waterproof bag for your phone, and don’t forget sunscreen.
