Queenstown rafting is genuinely fun but not life-changing. Expect cold water, bouncy Class III–IV rapids, a few big splashes, and the occasional swim in the river. The Shotover trip is shorter, steeper and more dramatic with tight canyon walls; the Kawarau is wider, a bit tamer and usually the better pick for first-timers or anyone nervous about swimming. Most trips last 4–4.5 hours door-to-door including transport, safety briefing and a quick change afterwards. You’ll get wet, you’ll laugh, and you’ll probably be sore the next day in ways you didn’t expect.
Best time is December to April when the water is warmer and flows are more predictable. Shoulder months (October–November and May) are cheaper and less crowded but the water is colder. Expect to pay around NZ$170–220 per person depending on whether you add a jetboat combo. Skip the jetboat add-on unless you really want two thrills in one day; the rafting alone is the main event and the combo just makes the day longer for not much extra excitement.
