Windsurfing in Mauritius: What You Need to Know

Mauritius delivers reliable trade winds and warm water, but conditions vary a lot by location. The southwest coast around Le Morne is the main spot: flat-water lagoon inside the reef for beginners and intermediates, with decent wave sailing on the outside when the swell is up. Expect gusty afternoons that can hit 15–25 knots from May to October. The water is clear and shallow enough that you can stand up in many places, but the reef is sharp so reef shoes are smart. It’s not a place for total beginners with zero water time; you’ll progress faster if you already know how to waterstart.

The best season runs from June to September when the southeast trade winds are strongest and most consistent. December to February can be lighter and less predictable, though you’ll still get days. Expect to pay around $80–$130 for a half-day rental and lesson package, or $350–$550 for a five-day course with gear. Private instruction pushes the upper end.

Pick a school that actually assesses your level on day one instead of dumping everyone in the same group. Skip trying to bring your own rig unless you’re based here; rental boards and sails are modern and well-maintained. And don’t over-schedule: the wind usually kicks in after lunch, so mornings are better spent diving or relaxing.
