Is the Woodland Park Zoo Worth It?

A solid mid-sized zoo with decent habitats for gorillas, elephants, bears, and a strong Pacific Northwest focus. Expect to spend 3–4 hours if you walk at a normal pace and stop to watch animals. It’s clean, well-kept, and easy to navigate on foot, but it still has some older exhibits that feel a bit dated. The crowd levels vary wildly: weekdays are relaxed, summer weekends get busy and loud. It’s a genuine half-day activity rather than an all-day epic.

Best time is late spring or early fall when temperatures are mild and lines are shorter. Summer is peak season with longer hours and more baby animals, but you’ll share it with lots of families. Expect to pay around $25–40 per adult ticket depending on timing and whether you buy ahead; kids and seniors are cheaper. Add $8–12 for parking if you drive. Food inside is typical zoo markup—plan on $15–25 per person if you eat there.

Strongly prioritize the gorilla and elephant areas plus the temperate forest trail; those are the best habitats. Skip the small petting area unless you have young kids—it’s underwhelming. Wear comfortable shoes; the hills are gentle but add up.
