You'll board a colorful flat-bottomed trajinera with a group (or hire your own) and drift along canals lined with chinampas — the ancient floating gardens. Expect loud mariachi boats circling you, vendors selling everything from tacos to flowers, and a festive but chaotic atmosphere. The scenery is pretty for the first 30-40 minutes then gets repetitive; the whole thing feels like a Mexican version of a theme-park boat ride mixed with a floating party. It's genuinely unique but not peaceful.

Best time is weekday mornings in the dry season (November-April) when it's cooler and less crowded. Weekends are packed with local families and the music never stops. Expect to pay around $35-70 per person for a shared tour with some drinks and snacks, or $150-250 total for a private boat for up to 10-12 people for an hour. Longer rides or ones with food and a guide push toward the higher end.

Tip: hire your own boat if traveling with 4+ people — it's cheaper per head and you control the pace. Skip the overpriced food and beer sold on the water; eat at the market before or after instead. Bring sunscreen and cash in small bills.
