Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral: Worth It?

Expect a genuinely impressive underground church carved inside an active salt mine about 45 minutes north of Bogotá. The route takes you through a series of dimly lit chambers with huge carved crosses, subtle lighting, and a cavernous main nave where mass is still held. It’s more atmospheric and engineering marvel than traditional cathedral – cool (literally around 14°C), quiet, and surprisingly moving if you’re into unusual religious sites. The whole visit takes roughly 1.5–2 hours once inside. It’s touristy but well managed; weekends get noticeably busier with local families and school groups.

Best time to go is weekday mornings during the dry season (December to March) when traffic out of Bogotá is lighter and you avoid the worst of the highland drizzle. Expect to pay around $25–45 per person total from Bogotá, depending on whether you do a shared shuttle, private driver, or guided tour with transport included. Entry alone is cheaper if you handle your own taxi or bus.

Tip: Hire a guide on-site or join a small group tour – the story of how the mine became a cathedral is worth hearing. Skip the overpriced café at the exit and eat in the town square instead; the traditional Colombian lunch spots there are better and half the price.
