Edinburgh Zoo sits on a steep hillside overlooking the city, so expect a fair bit of uphill walking. The animal collection is solid for a mid-sized zoo: the penguin parade is genuinely fun and draws crowds twice a day, the koalas are the only ones in the UK, and the giraffes and big cats are well worth seeing. Views across Edinburgh are a bonus on clear days. It’s easy to spend 3–4 hours here, but after that it starts to feel like any other zoo. The layout means you’ll get a decent workout; wear proper shoes.
Best time is late spring or early autumn. Summer gets very busy and the animals hide from the heat; winter is quieter but cold and wet. Expect to pay around £20–28 per adult, less for kids. Adding a guided tour bumps it up another £10–15 if you want more background.
Tip: prioritise the morning penguin parade and then head straight for the hilltop areas while most people are still at the entrance. Skip the gift shop at the exit unless you enjoy overpriced plush toys; instead spend time with the smaller primates or the excellent bird exhibits which are often quieter and more interesting than the big-name animals everyone crowds around.
