Is Chicago Zoo Lights Worth It?

Chicago's zoo lights turn the zoo into a colorful winter walk with illuminated animal sculptures, trees draped in lights, and a festive atmosphere. Expect crowds, especially on weekends, with paths that take about 45-90 minutes to wander. It's family-oriented, so you'll see lots of kids, strollers, and photo stops. The lights look best after full dark, and there are usually warm drinks and simple food stalls available. It's a solid seasonal activity if you're already in the city, but not a must-do if you're short on time or energy in the cold.

Go between mid-November and early January, ideally on a weekday evening right after it gets dark (around 5-6pm) to avoid the worst crowds and see everything lit up properly. Expect to pay around $20-35 per adult for entry, with kids often cheaper or free on certain nights; add $10-20 each if you want parking or extras like a train ride. Total per person usually lands between $25 and $50 depending on what you buy.

Pick a clear, not-too-windy night and wear serious winter layers—standing around in the cold gets brutal fast. Skip the overpriced food inside if you can; eat nearby beforehand. The basic lighted path is plenty; you don't need every add-on.
