A half-day at Zoo Negara gives you a standard zoo experience with decent space for the animals and pleasant shaded walks. Expect to see orangutans, elephants, tigers, bears, and the giant pandas that remain the biggest draw. The grounds are large so you'll do plenty of walking; it feels more like a proper zoo than a small urban one, but it's not world-class. Animals are generally well-kept though some enclosures feel dated. Families with kids will find it enjoyable; adults without children may find it only moderately interesting unless you really like zoos.
Best time is early morning on a weekday during the dry season (June to September) before it gets hot and crowded. Weekends and school holidays get packed with local families. Expect to pay around RM 80-120 per adult including panda house entry, plus another RM 30-50 for transport or a Grab ride from central KL. Food inside is average and overpriced so eat before or after.
Tip: go straight to the panda area first thing then walk the main loop clockwise; the safari tram is worth skipping as it misses half the exhibits. Bring water, wear good shoes, and don't bother with the night safari option here - it's not the strong point.
