The San Diego Zoo is a solid half-to-full day activity if you like animals and don’t mind crowds. Expect spacious, well-designed enclosures, a hilly layout that will give your legs a workout, and the usual mix of popular animals (pandas, elephants, giraffes) plus plenty of lesser-known species. It gets busy, especially around feeding times and the big shows, so lines for popular exhibits can eat into your day. Most visitors walk away tired but happy, though some find it expensive for what is ultimately a very good zoo rather than a life-changing experience.
The best time to visit is fall or spring when the weather is mild and crowds are lighter. Summer is hot, packed, and exhausting. Expect to pay around $70–$90 per adult for a standard one-day ticket if bought online in advance; add $15–25 more if you want the guided bus tour or Skyfari gondola. Kids are roughly half price.
Smart move: arrive at opening and head straight for the upper zoo areas before the crowds build. Skip the souvenir shops and overpriced food inside—eat before or after outside the gates. If you’re short on time or energy, the standard ticket is plenty; the extras rarely feel worth the added cost.
