Aapravasi Ghat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site consisting of partial remains of three stone buildings from an Immigration Depot built in the 1860s in Port Louis. From 1849 to 1923, half a million Indian indentured labourers passed through this complex before being transported to plantations throughout the British Empire, fundamentally shaping the demographic and cultural identity of Mauritius and other former British colonies. Visitors can see the surviving structures including the entrance gateway, hospital block, and remnants of immigration sheds, now protected as a national monument and managed by the Aapravasi Ghat Trust Fund.
