The Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere was probably the first official place of Christian worship in Rome, built in the 3rd century and rebuilt during the 12th century. Visitors see important medieval mosaics by Pietro Cavallini depicting the Life of the Virgin, a richly decorated gilded ceiling designed by Domenichino, and an interior with twenty-two ancient granite columns likely from the Baths of Caracalla.
