Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary is a habitat complex of mudflats, salt marshes, coastal prairie uplands, and beach created by the North Jetty at the mouth of Galveston Bay, which accumulates rich sediments supporting invertebrates and marine organisms. The site provides resting, feeding, and breeding grounds for hundreds of thousands of birds annually and holds the highest international designation as a Globally Important Bird Area. Visitors walk along the beach to observe and watch the protected birds and wildlife that inhabit this exceptionally productive coastal ecosystem.
