Kernave is a small town 35 km from Vilnius that was one of the first centers of the Lithuanian state in the 13th century. Five hillfort mounds on the Pajautos plain preserve the remains of the last pagan state capital in Europe. The State Kernave Cultural Reserve, established in 1989 and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004, contains 18 protected cultural heritage objects and an archaeology and history museum displaying artifacts from all periods of Lithuanian prehistory.
