La Fortaleza is the official residence and workplace of the Governor of Puerto Rico, located in Old San Juan's historic quarter. Built as a medieval fortress from 1533 to 1540, it is the oldest executive seat in continuous use in the New World and now features Neoclassical architecture. Visitors can observe a UNESCO World Heritage Site that served as the first Spanish fortification to defend San Juan Bay and contains formal living quarters, sheltered gardens, and a swimming pool within its historic walls.
