Las Murallas are the comprehensive fortification walls of Cartagena's old city, constructed beginning in 1586 to protect the Spanish Crown's colonial riches from pirates and attacks. Now among the most well-preserved ramparts in the world and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, visitors can walk atop the walls at dusk to watch the sunset over the city.
