SANBI operates the largest zoo in the country with national status, housing over 8,800 specimens across 209 mammal species, 202 bird species, 190 fish species, and numerous reptile and invertebrate species. The organization also manages multiple national botanical gardens across South Africa, including Kirstenbosch and the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden, dedicated to conservation of indigenous biodiversity and plant life.
