Warsaw Old Town is the oldest portion of Warsaw, containing historic buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries including the Royal Castle, St. John's Cathedral, the Barbican, and the Old Town Market Square. Nearly destroyed during World War II, it was meticulously reconstructed using original materials and historical sources, becoming the world's first attempt to resurrect an entire historic city core and earning UNESCO World Heritage status in 1980.
