Descend 16 km through the dramatic Samaria Gorge — Europe's longest canyon, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — guided privately through towering rock walls, ancient Cretan pine forests, and crystal-clear streams.
What to expect
Transfer by private vehicle across the White Mountains to the gorge entrance at Xyloskalo (1,250 m elevation). Your expert guide leads you through the narrowing ravine — most dramatic at the famous Iron Gates, where the walls close to just 3 metres apart. The 16 km descent ends at the seaside village of Agia Roumeli, where you cool off with a swim before a boat transfer to Chora Sfakion. A scenic drive returns you to Heraklion port. The sheer geological drama is unlike anything else in Greece.
Good to know
This is a strenuous full-day hike (6–7 hrs walking); suitable for fit, active travellers only. Gorge season is May–October. Essential: trekking shoes, sun protection, 2L of water. Confirm ship's all-aboard before booking — this excursion requires a late departure (typically 8 PM+). Gorge entry fee included.
