Cruise Fare Index

How the price of the same cruises moves from one night to the next. Every sailing is compared only with its own earlier price, so new sailings coming on sale or old ones selling out never move the number. Updated October 8, 2026.

On October 8, 2026 the same cruises cost 0.3% more than on September 26, the first night our read covered the whole catalog: 29,873 sailings compared, each against its own earlier price. Among the cruise companies, fares rose most at Royal Caribbean Group (+2.1%) and fell most at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (−0.6%). Sailings 3 to 6 months away moved +0.0%; those leaving within 3 months moved −0.5%.

The index

Each line starts at 100 on its first day. Shaded and dashed: before Sep 26 our nightly read covered a few hundred sailings, not the whole catalog, so read that stretch as rough.

Fares against the cruise stocks

Each listed company’s fare index beside its share price, both set to 100 on the first trading day both exist. A marker shows the day the company released its results.

Too early to call either way. With 23 trading days, no link between daily fare moves and daily share moves can be told apart from chance; share prices react within a day to results, guidance and the market, and fares move slowly. The test that matters is whether this index tracks the pricing the companies report each quarter, and that needs two or three quarters. Share prices: daily closes via Yahoo Finance.

How it is measured

Every night we price every sailing we track, all four cabin grades (inside, ocean view, balcony, suite), per person with taxes and port fees included. Each sailing and grade is compared only with its own previous price, read at most three days earlier, as a percentage change; a sailing’s grades are averaged so each sailing counts once; the day’s move for a group is the average across its sailings and needs at least 20 of them, and the days are chained into the index. A sailing coming on sale, selling out or leaving our list never moves it; only a change in a price we read twice can. One move is capped at about −33% / +49%: when the cheapest cabin of a grade sells out, the next category’s price answers, and a jump that size is usually that rather than a fare change. A rising index means the same cruises are getting dearer, which is what cruise lines do as cabins sell; a falling one means they are being cut to fill ships.
