Año Nuevo Elephant Seal Colony, Private Naturalist Access

A guided walk to the beach where thousands of wild elephant seals haul out — one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles on the California coast.

What to expect

A naturalist docent leads small groups roughly 3 miles round-trip through dunes to the beach where northern elephant seals — some weighing two tons — breed, molt, or rest depending on season. You'll hear the males' guttural roars and watch pups at close but safe distance. The docent explains the species' near-extinction and remarkable recovery.
