Comino on Foot: Santa Marija Tower & the Empty Trails

Walk the island's rugged interior — salt pans, wildflowers, the 17th-century watchtower — where almost no cruise visitor ever sets foot. This is Comino as locals and hikers know it, not the lagoon postcard.

What to expect

From the ferry landing you climb a stony path past the old salt pans and up to Santa Marija Tower, a Knights-era watchtower with sweeping views over Malta, Gozo and the lagoons below. The walk is roughly 3km round trip over rough but manageable terrain. Beyond the Blue Lagoon crowd, you'll likely pass only a handful of other walkers.

Good to know

Wear proper shoes — there's no shade and the ground is uneven; bring your own water as there are no shops on the island. Ferries run frequently from Cirkewwa or Mgarr, so timing back to ship is flexible.
