A private skippered boat glides the Spaarne and inner canals past almshouse courtyards and merchant houses invisible from the streets — no shared tour, no fixed script.
What to expect
You step down into a low wooden boat at a quiet mooring near the centre, and the captain eases out past waterside cafés into a narrower, greener stretch of canal lined with almshouses and private gardens. Bridges duck low enough to touch, and the captain narrates as much or as little history as you want. It ends back near the Grote Markt with time to walk off before returning to port.
Good to know
Book at least a few days ahead for the right time slot; morning departures avoid tour-boat traffic on the Spaarne. Factor in the ~20-30 minute transfer from Ijmuiden to Haarlem each way.
