National Museum of the Faroe Islands (Tjóðsavnið)

A compact, uncrowded museum in Hoyvík covering Viking settlement, Faroese boat-building, and rural life — the one that actually explains the place rather than performs it.

What to expect

Rooms move from Viking-age grave goods through reconstructed turf-roofed interiors to old wooden fishing boats built for the brutal North Atlantic. Displays are unglamorous but honest, with English text throughout. It sits a short taxi ride from the harbour, often nearly empty even in high season.

Good to know

A quick taxi (10 minutes) from the cruise berth; pair it with a walk back along the coastal path into town. Closed Mondays outside peak summer — check the day before.
