Myrina's Byzantine Kastro at Golden Hour

Climb the free-roaming, unfenced fortress above town at sunset, where wild deer graze among Genoese and Byzantine ruins and the Aegean stretches in every direction.

What to expect

You walk up from the harbor through town, past the old quarter, onto a rocky headland dividing Myrina's two bays. There's no gate or entrance fee — you simply wander the ramparts and towers as the sun drops over the Aegean. Small herds of fallow deer graze unbothered nearby, a quirk locals will tell you is the island's best-kept secret. Give it a full hour either side of sunset for the light.

Good to know

Wear real shoes — the paths are uneven volcanic rock. Go 90 minutes before sunset and stay through it; return to the harbor via the Turkish quarter's lantern-lit lanes for dinner before all-aboard.
