A working Serbian Orthodox monastery in wooded hills above the Danube, rebuilt over centuries and still home to monks — the place locals actually visit, not the postcard fortress.
What to expect
You'll walk frescoed chapels and a courtyard shaded by old trees, well off the river route most cruise passengers never see. There's a natural spring on site believed locally to have healing properties, and monks are often willing to talk with visitors who arrive respectfully and unhurried. The drive itself, through rolling hills above the Danube, is part of the reward.
Good to know
About 20-30 minutes by car from Golubac; a private driver-guide is the easiest way to arrange it given limited public transport. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered).
