What to expect
You arrive at the fortress grounds while it's still quiet, your guide leading you along the massive stone bastions built after Napoleon razed the original fortress. From the walls you look straight down onto the Deutsches Eck, where the Rhine and Mosel visibly meet in two different colors. The state museum inside covers regional history if you want to extend the visit.

Combine with the cable car for the smoothest access up; go first thing in the morning for both light and space on the ramparts.
