A visit to the extraordinary rock-hewn Chiesa di Piedigrotta, carved into sandstone cliffs by shipwrecked sailors, followed by a quiet coastal walk near Zambrone.
What to expect
Inside a soft sandstone cliff face, generations of local sculptors carved an entire church interior and statuary by hand, giving it an eerie, catacomb-like atmosphere unlike anywhere else on this coast. A local guide can explain the shipwreck legend behind its founding and point out the more unusual carvings. Afterwards, a short walk along the nearby Zambrone coastline gives sweeping views with almost nobody else around. It's an easy half-day that feels genuinely off the map.
