Three Rivers (Dreiflüsse) Sightseeing Boat Cruise

Passau is THE City of Three Rivers, and this ~45-minute cruise is the only way to actually see the famous confluence from the water — where the blue-green Danube, the milky alpine-green Inn, and the dark Ilz meet and run side-by-side in distinct colors before mixing. You glide past the Old Town's Italianate skyline, the Veste Oberhaus fortress on its bluff, and the Mariahilf pilgrimage church. It is the single signature image first-timers come for, and the boat docks right where river-cruise ships tie up, so there is zero transfer.

What to expect

You board a scenic boat steps from where your river-cruise ship docks and glide directly into the heart of Passau's most iconic moment: the Dreiflüsse confluence, where the blue-green Danube, milky alpine-green Inn, and dark Ilz meet and flow side-by-side in distinct, unmixed colors. The ~45-minute cruise unfolds with views of the Old Town's Italianate spires, the hilltop Veste Oberhaus fortress, and the Mariahilf pilgrimage church rising from the riverbank. You witness the rivers gradually blend into a unified flow, then return to the Town Hall Square quay—the entire experience unfolding from water level, the vantage point that makes the three-river phenomenon actually visible and memorable. Boats depart every 30 minutes throughout the main season, so timing is flexible and pressure-free.

Beats the ship · vs the cruise line

Direct wins big. River and ocean lines sell the same Three Rivers scenic ride as an optional in the $45-$50 band; at €15 you are paying roughly a third and walking onto the identical boat at the pier. Book direct and pocket ~$30/pp. (Note: the line's pricier €22.50 ticket bundles a guided town walk — skip it unless you want the walk.)

Good to know

Book the €15 direct ticket (not the ship's ~$50 package) and walk straight to Rathausplatz quay from the pier with zero transfer hassle. Departures run every 30 minutes from 10:00–16:30, so a typical 6–8 hour port day allows 2–3 departure windows; plan to board by mid-afternoon to leave comfortable buffer time back to the ship. Bring a camera, sunscreen, and a layer for river wind; no advance booking is necessary—tickets sell at the quay. Skip the €22.50 walk-and-boat bundle unless you want a guided Old Town tour in addition to the cruise.
