What to expect
Travel 18 km north along the fjord to the small resort village of Laboe, where the dramatic 72-metre tower rises above the Baltic shoreline. Ascend to the observation deck for sweeping sea views, then descend into the adjacent U-995 submarine, preserved exactly as it was in wartime service. The audio guide (available in English) narrates harrowing patrol stories and explains every piece of equipment in the cramped interior.
Good to know
Laboe is roughly 30 min by ferry from Kiel's Bahnhofsbrücke (Förde Reederei Seetouristik), or 25 min by taxi/rideshare — the ferry journey itself is a scenic bonus. The site is open daily; combined tickets (memorial + submarine) purchased at the entrance. Allow 2.5–3 hours on site. Easy to combine with a fjord ferry ride for a full half-day.
