Alcatraz Island: Early-Access Cellhouse Audio Tour

Step inside America's most notorious federal penitentiary before the crowds arrive. Walk the cell blocks, hear the haunting audio tour narrated by former guards and inmates, and absorb the raw atmosphere of "The Rock" in near-solitude.

What to expect

The 15-minute ferry crossing frames postcard views of the bay and the Golden Gate. On the island, a Ranger-led orientation sets the scene before you pick up the GRAMMY Award-winning Cellhouse Audio Tour. Narrated by the men who lived and worked inside, it guides you through Broadway, Times Square, and the infamous B-Block escape route. The evening tour ends with the island bathed in theatrical lighting and the city skyline glittering across the water.

Good to know

Tickets sell out weeks — sometimes months — in advance; book the moment your itinerary is confirmed. The cruise terminal at Pier 27 is a 10-minute Uber or 20-minute waterfront walk from Pier 33 (Alcatraz Landing). Confirm all-aboard time and allow at least 3.5 hours for the evening tour.
