What to expect
An early-morning high-speed train or private car (2.5 hrs) delivers you to Hualien, gateway to Taroko. A short helicopter transfer lifts you above the sheer 1,000-metre marble cliffs and turquoise Liwu River — a jaw-dropping 15-minute panorama. On the valley floor, your naturalist guide leads you through the Shakadang Trail and Swallow Grotto, pointing out marble formations millions of years in the making and sharing the heritage of the Truku aboriginal people. Return by train to Keelung in the late afternoon.
