Survey Japan's only Western-style star-shaped fortress — scene of the Boshin War's final battle — from the glass-floored Goryokaku Tower, then walk its cherry-blossom-lined moats with a licensed historian guide. A defining chapter of Japanese history made vivid.
What to expect
Ascend Goryokaku Tower for a bird's-eye view of the perfect five-pointed star, its geometry still razor-sharp from above. Below, the moated grounds are a masterclass in 19th-century European military architecture transplanted to Japan. Sara leads you across the drawbridge and through the restored magistrate's office, narrating the tragic last stand of the Shinsengumi. In spring the fort's 1,600 cherry trees make this one of Hokkaido's most spectacular hanami sites.
