Witness Japan's most dramatic sea cliffs — sheer columns of basalt sculpted by volcanic fury stretching over a kilometre along the Sea of Japan coast — one of the country's most visually arresting natural spectacles.
What to expect
Approximately 60–70 minutes by road from Tsuruga, the Tojinbo cliffs rise up to 25 metres directly from the sea in jagged basalt organ-pipe formations — a UNESCO-recognised geological wonder. Walk the cliff-top promenade as waves thunder against the rock face below. On clear days the Oki Islands are visible on the horizon. Small fishing boats ply the water far below, giving dramatic scale to the columns. Optional boat tours from the base offer a breathtaking perspective looking back up at the cliffs.
Good to know
This excursion requires approximately 4–5 hours return from port, so confirm it fits your ship's schedule. Wear sturdy shoes — cliff-edge paths are uneven. Wind can be fierce; bring a layer. Pre-book through Asia Shore Excursions to secure transport and guiding.
