Witness the raw, living power of Hokkaido's volcanic heartland at Lake Toya — a vast caldera lake of luminous blue — and the crater scarred flanks of Mount Usu, which last erupted as recently as 2000. One of Japan's most dramatic natural spectacles, all yours by private car.
What to expect
The drive west from Muroran climbs through cedar forests before revealing the stunning caldera panorama of Lake Toya — 11 kilometres across, its volcanic island centrepiece perfectly reflected in the water. Your guide drives the lakeside circuit, stopping at the Usu Zan Ropeway for a cable-car ascent to the scarred summit area where lava domes and volcanic craters tell the story of Japan's dynamic geology. The town of Toya Onsen on the lake's southern shore offers world-class lakefront resort restaurants for a refined lunch.
Good to know
Lake Toya is approximately 60–75 minutes from Muroran port. This is a full-day excursion — plan for 6–7 hours minimum. Usu Zan Ropeway tickets are approx. JPY 1,800 per person return. Pre-book with your operator and confirm all-aboard time the evening before sailing.
